THE DDL FOUNDATION
The DDL Foundation is not a charitable organization. It is intended to complement the traditionally high educational system for which Guyana is renowned. In accordance with the Rules of the Foundation, “the object for which the Foundation is established is to assist and advance the educational opportunities of children who, based on the criteria set out by the Select Committee of the Board from time to time, are eligible to receive scholarships, bursaries and other benefits to commence, continue and/or further education.”
The focus of the Foundation’s attention will initially be directed to those students whose results are among the top two percentile of the marks attained at the National Grade Six Examination. Awardees will then be assisted, within the context of a Mentorship Programme, in maintaining that level of excellence throughout the next five years of their secondary schooling. The Foundation will also provide support as required with tutoring, essential text and other books, transportation and with any other related forms of assistance as may be required during this period.
From its inception the DDL Group of Companies has been demonstrating in positive and tangible ways a clear recognition and appreciation of its dynamic interrelatedness with the society within which it functions and from which it derives its strength and success. Throughout this period DDL has been making contributions to and giving its support for various charitable organizations, non-governmental organizations national cultural and recreational events and to myriad aspects of community events.
It was against this background of practical assistance and in ongoing demonstration of corporate responsibility that the Board of Directors of DDL determined that the Company should find a way to make a more durable and substantial form of contribution that would have a long term impact on Guyana’s social and economic development. The result has been the establishment of a Foundation that is designed specifically to contribute to the social and intellectual development of the nation’s youth.
The Board of the Foundation has determined that the operations of the Foundation should be characterized by a strict adherence to proper financial procedures. To this end it has agreed that for the time being it will rely on and be guided by DDL’s expertise in financial management and accountability thereby giving the assurance to potential contributors that their donations will be directed to serve only the interests of the Foundation’s awardees.
In July 2010 the Board of Directors of the DDL Group of Companies decided to establish the DDL Foundation “ to assist and advance the educational opportunities of children who, based on criteria set out by a Select Committee of the Board from time to time, are eligible to receive scholarships, bursaries and other benefits to commence, continue and/or further their education.” The Foundation was formally registered as a Specially Authorised Society under the Friendly Societies Act ( Guyana ) on 27 July 2010.
At the very core of the Foundation is its Fund Raising Programme. For the Foundation to function and to meet its stated objectives both in the short term and as an input into the future development of Guyana, it has to create a Fund that will be adequate to sustain its programme. It is estimated that the modest plan of giving Foundation awards to 5 students each year for the next 5 years will cost approximately G$..........
The Foundation began its programme of assistance in January 2011 with volunteer assistance provided by the DDL staff and a cash contribution of G$1 million from the DDL Group of Companies. In addition there are voluntary monthly contributions from DDL staff who also share the objectives of the Foundation and are committed to its success.
These are modest sums. The Fund Raising Committee is finalizing a programme for a national appeal for contributions. The Committee also will seek to capitalize on DDL’S reputation not only as a responsible corporate organization but also a Company whose El Dorado brand has won world wide acclaim. In this regards the Fund Raising Committee intends to widen its appeal to include the global friends of El Dorado who would wish to partnership with the Foundation in the realization of its objectives.
